Motor City Brew Tours

Motor City Brew Tours offers guided public and private bus, walk, boat and bike tours in Detroit Michigan. Taking you to places that make beer, hard cider and mead.  In the summer of 2009, Stephen & Laura Johnson co-formed Motor City Brew Tours™ and started offering bus and walking tours to Detroit area breweries. We take you on guided tours to breweries, cideries or meaderies. We sample beers, hard cider or mead and go on tours. Our knowledgeable staff is there to interact with the tour group the entire time. We run bus and walking tours year-round.

In 2011, we added bike tours and bike rides to our offerings. Bike Tours are guided small group bike tours in downtown and metro Detroit with different historical themes. We make tour stops along the route to describe the historical significance and for you to enjoy the many highlights in the city. You get to learn about Detroit history and get rewarded with beer at the end of the ride at a local brewery. We run the bike tours from spring to early fall. We also run multiple beer tasting boat cruise events in partnership with the Detroit Princess Riverboat. Enjoy a cruise on the Detroit River and sample seasonal local beer and hard cider and lunch. We run these events on select dates. 

We support Michigan Breweries, meaderies and cideries. We have over 50 tour partners! Since June 2009, we have taken more than 25,000 people on tours. 

“Detroit Beer - A History of Brewing in the Motor City” was written by Motor City Brew Tours™ owner, Stephen Johnson. The book was published by Arcadia Publishing & The History Press. The book chronicles Detroit Beer History from the 1800’s up to prohibition, during the rise & fall and through the current craft beer boom. Profiles and interviews with over 50 breweries and contains 80 historic pictures. Stephen Johnson interviews folks in the Detroit beer, cider and mead industry on the “Beer Tour Guy™" podcast. We support the community that we serve by running an annual charity bike rides that draws 100's of bike riders to the rail trails of Macomb & Oakland County. To date, we have raised more than $30,000 for local trail groups. We have partnered with multiple non-profits to raise money for their causes that help the local community that we live in.
